Alfreda Reynolds

Monochrome photographs with an emphasis on compositional form and graphic elements. Cards and archival quality, fine art prints.

For me, creating a monochrome image means interpreting the scene or subject rather than illustrating it. Working in shades of grey offers me choice over the feel and tone of the finished image and I can be open to different ways of seeing.

Although I often favour distinct shape and form, I’m fascinated by photography’s ability to preserve the transient, and to suggest visual ambiguity. Some of my images contain abstract elements but only rarely will the viewer be unduly hampered in recognising what they see.

Most of the images are found in natural or built environments but my subject matter is diverse. I’m drawn to coastal areas and ideas of emptied landscapes, and to urban and/or industrial spaces still bearing evidence of people’s intervention.

I work from digital and scanned film originals. My processing is digital and finished exhibition pieces are printed onto fine art paper using archival inks.
