Catherine Acons

BA and MA, including sculpture and ceramics. Over forty years’ experience, HE, FE gallery workshops, sculpture exhibitions, scenic painting and costume. Current passion-large water colour, botanical, Japanese-inspired canvases. Less is more. Transient beauty.

Many years’ experience moved me through sculpture and ceramics, into land and seascapes and now swiftly painted floral studies on canvas. Not botanical studies but rather the movement and inner beauty of a plant, even as it fades. They appear simple but take much absorbing study and then swift execution! For family reasons I began working in and around my home and garden, gleaning ideas from what I had, a small world with sometimes very small, blissfully free gaps. Sometimes I would paint the same subject many times with different approaches. I work both in a room at the back, looking to the garden and in the converted old washhouse opposite, where I can be more messy. In the nice weather the garden space in between is where I set my easel and paint the flowers in situ. I love Chinese and Japanese style and, while not copying those specific techniques, I embrace their minimal simplicity – Transient Beauty.
