I am 80 years old and I have painted and created things most of my life. Throughout it has been my experience – where I have lived, who I’ve met, the people I’ve been lucky to share my life with, the challenges I’ve encountered – all have shape and given meaning to my work at different times and stages.
The ancient landscape and archaeology of Ireland were seminal influences, the great Neolithic cairns with their elaborate carvings and solar alignments of the Boyne River Valley.
My drawings, paintings and prints are not necessarily pictorial representations of any particular scene but in the process of their making I use a variety of techniques in order to evoke the sense of place or things in their material textures and colour. The artists whose work were influential are Paul Klee, Antoni Tapes and Prunella Clough also the Abstract Expressionists for colour and painterly brush work.
