I make figurative garden sculptures from chicken wire. Pigs, hens, a jester and currently a large rabbit are appearing.
I started as a ceramic designer and am learning to have a looser approach to my work without making unnecessary rules. Clay is a wonderful material but I find that chicken wire suits my (retired teacher) lifestyle as there is no drying-out to worry about. Also I can work to a larger scale, which opens up new possibilities. I work from photographs and sketches and aim for realism while at the same time giving the creatures as much expression as I can. The sculptures are galvanised when finished which gives them more rigidity and a long life expectancy in the great outdoors. I like to celebrate the beauty and strength and humour inherent in every animal.
