Sue Lancaster

I work with observations of landscape and seascape, creating pieces for interiors and fashion using a variety of processes with an emphasis on machine embroidery.

There are some constants in my work and some variables.

I always work from observation of something in the world around me and places that I visit: landscape, seascape and nature. I draw and paint on paper to settle an understanding of the observations in my mind.

I am always drawn to colour, whether bright or subtle.

I always draw on fabric with a sewing machine to create imagery, mix colours and make interesting surfaces.

Sometimes I dye or paint fabrics. Sometimes I layer fabrics. Sometimes I make fabrics. Sometimes I make purely decorative works and sometimes I make functional pieces.

My current work is concerned with exploring using the wide zigzag stitch on my ‘Irish’ machine: a specialist industrial free embroidery machine.
