Viv Keel

I make things from glass, using a moulds and a kiln to drape or slump the items into the desired shapes.

I started working with glass 5 years ago at a WEA course. I quickly became hooked on the medium and, since getting my own kiln, have spent loads of time experimenting with the endless possibilities and processes.

Usually we look through glass to see other things, it’s fairly insignificant and invisible. Once glass is the medium we look at it, into it and through it – I like the idea of foregrounding and focussing on something which is usually unremarkable (and which is actually pretty amazing).

The items I make (some functional, some decorative) are usually made using recycled glass and often have wire shapes and sometimes small amounts of colour fused into them. Recently I have been experimenting with ‘posher’ glasses, particularly lead crystal, and have been combining the crystal with rocks. When the rocks are looked at through the crystal covering the strong refractions create strange effects.
