For over 30 years I have experimented with a variety of stoneware clay, burnishing and smoke firing. I work from a studio extension to my home, taking the sculptures out to the kiln in Derbyshire. Each firing may take up to 4 days to complete; the final finish is affected by the impact of the weather on the burning wood, within which the sculptures are buried.
Whether inspired by the landscape, Classical and 20th Century sculpture or ancient hand tools, I search for pure strong forms that reflect certain qualities of being. This may be exploring a form that reflects the feeling of holding or a sense of both movement and stillness within one form. Some works eg. Echo reflects the bridging of moments of time.
