Gill Gathercole

I paint contemporary landscapes and still lives in oil on canvas. Colour and expressive mark making are important aspects to my work.

Landscape and still life have long been areas of interest to me, and both seem to shift somewhere between abstract and figurative.

As well as painting I love drawing and always like to include my sketchbooks at Open Up. Often inspired by the Yorkshire coast and Peak district my landscapes are from memory and are more about evoking a sense of place rather than a direct representation. My still lives are from a collection of much loved objects in my studio.

My interest is in exploring colour, marks, darkness and light and their relationships to each other. Some of my influences include; Elizabeth Blackaddder, Joan Miro, Joan Eardley, Winifrid Nicholson.

I graduated in Fine Art from Nottingham in the 1980’s and have lived and worked in Sheffield since. I exhibit my work in galleries locally and further afield.

I regularly run art classes at Hangingwater Studios.
