Maria Newman

My work as a textile artist is inspired by nature and colour, involving patchwork and quilting and often incorporating elements of hand and machine embroidery.

I started patchwork and quilting when I was still a teenager, inspired by my mother and grandmother. Over the last 5 years I have increasingly focused upon hand and machine embroidery in my work, undertaking City and Guilds qulaifications up to diploma level. I take my inspiration from my love of colour and nature, sourcing from my own garden as well as my experience travelling across Europe. I love the challenge of incorporating fine and intricate detail in my work particularly through precision in hand stitching.
