Pauline Rignall

I use acrylic, watercolour, pastel and charcoal for figurative and abstract work whether working from landscape or still life. I’m inspired by Turner, Monet and David Bomberg.

My early artistic influences were in London, where I grew up. I modelled for a painter called Leon Kossoff and attended Life drawing classes taught by Sargy Mann. I exhibited work in The Camden Artists Show at Burgh House, Hampstead and at the Royal Festival Hall through the Spirit of London Competition. When I moved to Sheffield, I taught at the Mappin Art Gallery and at Sheffield College. I moved to Eyam in Derbyshire in 2010. Painting is a mysterious and intuitive process in which the medium of paint can express feelings about light and space.

I sketch in the local landscape, but in the studio the paintings take on a life of their own, going through many transitions before arriving at an unknown place. In 2009 I had an Arts Council funded show called the Energy of Myth at the Workstation, Sheffield. I have exhibited at the Bankside Gallery London (the Royal Watercolour Competition).
