Much of the inspiration for my work has come from spending time walking the Peaks and from the coastlines of Wales and Northumberland.
The dynamic of weather and light greatly influence my painting. My work tries to capture the moment when these elements make an emotional connection to me.
Although I start with sketches, my painting style is intuitive and tends to be guided by the memory and feelings of a place, rather than by its geography.
I apply the paint from thick layers of impasto to thin glaze washes. Scratching and mark making further help give the painting a sense of movement and energy.
The landscape that emerges is more suggestive than descriptive, inviting the viewer to find their own personal memories and interpretations from it.
