Clare Hughes

Painter/Printmaker working in a variety of techniques, acrylic, oils and mixed media incorporating collage and found objects, to produce mainly abstracts and prints.

My works are not necessarily pictorial representations of particular scenes. Instead, they are concerned with translating the traces of ancient landscape markers and of modern industrial decay that have remained after the passage of time, of rust and weather. It is this sense of continuity of communication over the passage of time that I strive to evoke through the process of layering, embedding, staining and incising the chosen material. Creating clues to their origins and resonating with Archaeological methods of grids and careful preservation of sites and the classification of found objects. It is these encounters with the ‘past in the present’ that provide us with continuity and communication across time and space.
