Lesley Churton

Wooden items turned by hand on a lathe. Interesting flaws left in; some pieces scorched to accentuate the grain pattern. Other turnable media used too.

A long time ago when I was at school no opportunity was given for girls to do woodwork or metalwork – things I would have been good at. Later, in the WRNS, I was given the chance to have a go on a woodturning lathe. That embryonic experience remained with me and in 1995, after moving to Sheffield, I took a weekend, one to one, course with a professional turner, bought a lathe and tools and have never looked back. I just love wood and working with it. I sometimes use a blowtorch and wire brush to accentuate the grain, particularly with oak and ash. My finishes are definitely not shiny and most of my pieces will fit into your hand.
