Mary Sewell

Mary Sewell

Handbuilt ceramic sculptures influenced by neolithic figurines, animal forms and objects found around the world.

Mary sculpts in clay and has an open and intuitive approach to making. Her work is mostly figurative and inspired by prehistoric figurines and objects. Mary has travelled widely in Asia, Middle East and Africa and her practice has been influenced by the countries she’s visited: Walking amongst the tomb raided sites of Siwa, through the urban oasis in Egypt, picking up remains of funereal wrappings and holding small pieces of the past in her hands.

She was recently awarded a DYCP award from the Arts Council to develop her practice and spent three weeks in Pondicherry India experiencing and learning about the ancient art of the anagama wood firing kiln.

The colours and textures of these places, around the desert and rooted in the earth have stayed with her and found lasting resonance within her work.
