NEW to Open Up!

Bev Seth

Influenced by folk tales and nature, I use clay to capture some strand of this. Hand building creatures, then domesticating them with a functional twist.

My work is about nature and our relationship with it. Underlying everything I make is the story, gathered from folktales and legend; perhaps whimsical, thought provoking or a glimpse of how we and our ancestors regard the world around us.

I imagined a creature during lockdown, these became the Caretaker birds and this is a strand of work I have continued to develop. I also model birds and creatures, attaching them to boxes, mixing the creatures outside with the mystery of the boxes use and its contents. Other creatures are attached to household items to bring a reminder of the wild into our homes.

I hand build with various techniques – slabs, pinch pots and modelling. Later in the process I carve for texture, paint with slips and add modelled details to decorate. Surfaces are glazed and coloured with oxides.
