Karen Sherwood

I am an expressive landscape painter. I work in oils on canvas wood, board and paper. The depiction of light is a key element in my work.

I graduated from Fine Art at Psalter Lane in 1990 and set up Cupola Gallery in 1991. Unsurprisingly my own painting practice took a back seat once I had decided to undertake this mammoth task. Although I did continue my practice it took a back seat to the gallery for many years and once my children were born, it retreated even further, resulting in a hiatus of around 12 years. However a holiday on the North East coast in 2012 courtesy of a friend and customer kick started my painting practice again and I have not stopped since. Originally strongly inspired by the North East coast, my work has now developed and moved away from depictions of any specific place or coastline. The landscape I paint evolves through the physical painting process and has become a vehicle for channelling my response to the world. I am hugely inspired by Turner’s use of light and light is a key element in my paintings. Often my palette is quite restricted and blue currently features very heavily.
