Having taught art and design in London and Wales we moved to Sheffield in 2012 and I began the Black Fish Press two years later. I find it easy to keep my business local, using vegetable oil based inks from Hawthorns in York, linen and cotton fabrics sourced from Bradford and cushions made up here in Sheffield. With each new design project I make small batches of textile pieces for sale, storing the blocks and printing notes for future orders. I’ve always been excited by the complexity of designs, textures and colours which can be achieved by a repetition of simple blocks and patterns, and from the use of overprinting and the repositioning of blocks. Each piece is printed separately with its own unique variations of colour, pattern and texture. My inspiration usually comes from the man made – from the forms and patterns of artefacts and the built environment.
