Mary Sewell

Explorer of place and materials, semi abstract paintings and sculptures using pigment and clay. Inspired by ancient cultures near and far.

Mary has worked from her studio at Portland Works for 15 years. Her work has shifted and evolved over the years through photography and painting. She is currently making paintings and sculptures from natural materials including pigments, clay and ink which are often sourced from local rivers and her allotment.

She is influenced by ancient cultures which she spent much of her earlier years exploring in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The colours and textures of these places have stayed with her and find lasting resonance within her work. This exploration of places; many of which were in the desert, are reflected in her experimentation and ‘travel’, near and far, with both the materials she uses and the work she produces.

She is hoping to develop workshops later in the year so watch this space.
