Mary Sewell

Small figurative sculptures inspired by global figurines from the prehistoric period.

Mary is influenced by the art of ancient cultures which she spent much of her earlier years exploring in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The colours and textures of these places, often deserts, have stayed with her and find lasting resonance within her work. She has spent the last year experimenting with different clays and surfaces, taking inspiration from the extraordinary figurines found around the world. “I find these figurines both fascinating and unique but there is an ordinariness in making them. I feel a direct connection to the body when shaping the forms and during the process of making they seem to take on their own identity. These figures continue to evolve, merging prehistoric culture with the contemporary world.” Mary runs figurine workshops from her studio throughout the year.
