Walking and being immersed the landscape really provides the starting point for Richard’s work, giving him an opportunity to build up a bank of ideas. Once back in the studio the process of painting takes on an intuitive approach. Memory and instinct guide the painting process so that the finished piece captures the essence of the landscape and its sense of place.
The work that evolves often has allusive, abstracted qualities. The movement of the wind and the rain as well as the drama of shifting light on the land provide fleeting, magical moments in an ever changing landscape. The paintings invite the viewer in, to find their own interpretation, their own personal story.
