Johnny Tyson

I design and make enduring contemporary furniture from found wood. Every piece of wood has a potential use, finding that use is my job.

I’m Johnny Tyson, and my company is called Fallen Giants. I’ve always loved making objects and repurposing found materials.

Previously I worked as graphic designer and then trained as a wooden boat builder. Rowing my boat out to sea is one of my proudest moments.

I trained in cabinet making but was appalled by the waste involved so I began making my own furniture from discarded wood. Friends and family began asking me to make similar pieces and the idea for Fallen Giants was formed.

Today I take found wooden objects and figure out ways to repurpose the timber into enduring contemporary furniture designs. I enjoy making intriguing features of reclaimed timber’s ‘imperfections’ such as cracks, screw holes and saw cuts. These inspire new ideas for what the material can become and so the story continues.

In doing so, I aim to encourage a shift towards more thoughtful consumption.
