After 10 years of life study I use my own texture photographs of natural materials – stone, woodbark, water – to re-create life drawings in photocollage. Writing and illustrating children’s stories, I hope to delight children with the Derbyshire landscape which has inspired me to go out and paint. Oil painting outdoors has its problems, but it brings a life and immediacy to the painting, supplemented by watercolour or ink and wash sketches to finish paintings in the studio. I have collated sections of panoramas painted outdoors in Derbyshire, Orkney and Connemara to represent the mountain and coastal views I enjoy. Much time this year has been spent working, sometimes with local school children, to create displays of bird and animal lanterns for the Parkwood Springs lantern festival. Weather permitting, I hope to display some larger lanterns outdoors – including the Parkwood Deer and the 9 metre fiery dragon.
