Cat Boettcher

Cat Boettcher works with oils, egg tempera and historic natural pigments to create large-scale paintings and Russo-byzantine iconography.

Cat Boettcher’s iconography is embedded within a medieval/monastic tradition which has been the wellspring of sacred art for two millennia, using materials, techniques, theology and theories that have remained unchanged for centuries. Cat works with the gems, metals and ground mineral pigments that were instrumental in the concurrent development of western sacred art and alchemy, and with them creates both traditional Russo-byzantine Christian iconography and contemporary esoteric icons.

The pigments are tempered with egg tempera and are painted in the liquid tempera style: an ancient technique which allows each material to glow with jewel-like colours on the marble gesso.

Cat also works with oils to create larger paintings which connect gnostic-biblical subjects to modern-day themes, threading pockets of silence within our western spiritual tradition together with current hierarchies of (un)holiness and gendered divinity.
