Dave Vanderhoven

Wood Artist: I use a wide range of tools, including a lathe, to shape wood. I am inspired by the interactions between philosophy, technique and form.

I am a self-taught furniture-maker and wood-turner and I have been turning professionally since January 2016. I source locally felled trees, discarded timber from skips, and I buy some exotic species from specialist suppliers. I use natural finishes to emphasise the wood’s beauty.

As the chain-sawed edges of the raw material are removed on the lathe, the grain and figure of each piece of wood is revealed for the very first time. The emergence of the wood’s character inspires ideas and begins to suggest the final form of each piece.

Every piece I produce is unique, using the structure of the wood to create pieces with thought-provoking and tactile form. I aim to produce objects that are not simply containers in themselves, but that every piece contains a shared love for the elegance of wood and expresses a sense of meaning about the world, which we can rediscover each day.
