Coming from a background in ceramics I am delighted with the possibilities opened up by chicken wire. It is strong and light so I am freed from the structural weakness of clay and also from the constraints of time. I can now work on a piece and come back to it a week later without considering the effect of the material drying out. I make drawings from photographs and interpret them in three dimensions, trying to work accurately whilst also trying to express the spirit and character of the creature. The animals I make are life sized or larger (there was an oversized rabbit a couple of years ago) and animate my garden, maintenance free, in all seasons,The grandchildren enjoy playing with them and I have been surprised by a wire fox hiding in an improvised den and a duck wearing a medal round its neck.
