Jacqueline Hilson

My work (mostly abstracted natural forms) is machine- embroidered, based on Reverse Applique which I have developed into my own style.

My work involves a technique, where I lay down layers of fabric (often silk, cotton and organza) onto which I then stitch a design. I then cut into the design revealing the layers underneath. To create texture and interest, I then over stitch.

I draw my influences from the world around me, via the filters of my Faith, Nigerian heritage, the German Expressionists and the Arts and Crafts Movement.

I am fascinated by colour and texture and the different way that people respond to them.I use a lot of tree and spiral images in my work as I find that these are elements that occur and have occurred in art throughout the world and throughout the Ages and I find that unifying.

As well as my textile pieces, I create woollen throws which I back with cotton velvet.

This year, I am mixing my media introducing paper and embossing powders.
