Kate’s career spans 40 years of exhibiting, teaching and working to commission. BA(Hons) and MA in Textiles (embroidery) started the journey which now embraces painting, collage and embroidery – mainly machine but also by hand.
Drawing has always been central for observation, recording and exploring subjects from landscape, skies, bird behaviour and flowers, to museum studies and decorative applied art.
Fabulous gold embroideries on dissolvable fabric or fine silk have dominated recent projects and samples are always around to handle. Many designs harp back to timeless traditions of lace and metalwork.
This year, the emphasis has been on a return to wild landscape for a commission which has been challenging, abstract and representational, textile and collage.
My beloved ‘Irish’ industrial sewing machine (c 1930) is my favourite piece of equipment with a free stitch up to 13mm wide and a thread collection of hundreds of colours and metals.
