Alfreda Reynolds

Monochrome photographs with an emphasis on compositional form and graphic elements. Cards and archival quality, fine art prints.

Although my subject matter is rooted in the real world, I’m forever attracted by qualities of abstraction and geometry. I look for compositions that have potential for capturing more than initially seems there. Working in shades of grey already provides a move away from reality, and I use tonal differences, varying light and contrast to explore creative possibilities. Using long exposures and infrared imagery provides further interpretative avenues to wander down.

Coastal areas, natural and urban landscapes with a sense of absence or emptiness interest me. My curiosity and exploration can make for a slow process, with ideas sometimes only coalescing on the way but every stage – from making the photograph to settling on a finished image – is part of the creative journey.

I work from digital and scanned film originals. My processing is digital and finished exhibition pieces are printed onto fine art paper using archival inks.
