Alfreda Reynolds

Monochrome photographs with an emphasis on compositional form and graphic elements. Cards and archival quality, fine art prints.

In my monochrome images, I bring out compositional elements such as line, shape and form. Establishing mood and atmosphere is an integral part of translating my visual perception into widely-ranging shades of grey. Restricting the palette is surprisingly liberating because colour can be distracting and imposes boundaries of how far from realistic representation one can move. I like to discover what may not be obviously there. Capturing infrared light and using long exposures add a degree of unpredictability into the possible outcomes. Exploring different ideas and themes also keeps me creatively fresh.

Although locations vary, I find much creative inspiration in the ever-changing qualities of coastal areas. My images tend to be strong graphically, sometimes with more than a hint of abstraction.

I work from digital and scanned film originals. My processing is digital and finished exhibition pieces are printed onto fine art paper using archival inks.
