Allison James

My textile wall hangings and modern improvisational quilts draw their inspiration from photographs to produce a visual conversation across both media – image and stitch!

Image & Stitch is a collaborative project between a photographer, Adrian James, and myself, Allison James, a textile artist. It explores the different opportunities for creativity offered by each medium through a shared focus on a particular theme. Both the natural and built environments are sources of inspiration, providing the starting points for a series of visual conversations.

My approach to textiles encompasses a mix of techniques including: hand and machine embroidery; felting and embellishing; and hand and machine quilting. I use these techniques in different combinations, as I respond to the imagery and atmosphere of each new photograph that provide the starting point for my designs. My work is largely non figurative and most recently I have been exploring the potential of improvisational approaches to modern quilt making.
