Charlotte Berry

Hand thrown and built stoneware for the table and garden, decorated with brilliant coloured slips, scratched, painted and trailed.

I caught the potting bug years ago through attending adult education classes in London. This continued when I moved to Sheffield and has become my livelihood since retiring from secondary school teaching. Colour and decoration are a big aspect of my work and the solar fountains I make give plenty of scope for embellishment with added clay decoration and use of colour. I particularly like the effects gained using coloured slips which I use like paint, often scratching through for sgrafitto effects or trailing contrasting colours over. Inspiration comes from art, the garden and looking at other makers ceramics. I am very lucky that my making is driven by interest rather than economics but strive always to make pieces that others will like and be able to use too. Currently, I’m enjoying the platter as a surface for decoration and embellishment.
