Di Shimell

I work in mixed metals, inc, silver, copper and brass, using colour from the metal and patina’s that are added after the pieces are finished.

I’m interested natural forms and introducing colour and texture into my work, I use a technique of fusing silver with base metals, mostly copper, brass and gilding metal, then I will often add a patina to colour the final pieces. I also leave pieces in their natural colours, the gilding metal will slowly turn a darker colour, but if cleaned it’ll look like rose gold.

For the last few years, I’ve been developing an interest in different metal working technique, especially Mokume Gane, and cuttlefish casting, using a mix of silver, brass and copper, I’ve continued to add a patina to some pieces, adding additional colour to my work.

I’m always exploring different ways of creating and designing jewellery which is interesting and different, but practical to wear and enjoy. Each piece that I make is unique, and although some of the designs remain similar each item is individually created.
