Gill Gathercole

I paint semi-abstract landscapes and contemporary still-life, mainly in oil but also mixed media. Inspired by the Peak District, Yorkshire coast and collected objects.

My landscapes are from memory and are about evoking a sense of place and an emotional connection rather than a direct representation. My still-life paintings are from a collection of much loved objects in my studio. My interest is in exploring colour, marks, darkness and light and their relationships to each other. As well as painting I love drawing and always like to include my sketchbooks at Open Up. I graduated in Fine Art from Nottingham in the 1980’s and have lived in Sheffield since. Previously working as a graphic designer and mural artist, now running regular art classes at Hangingwater Studio. I exhibit my work in galleries locally and further afield, in recent years my work has been selected for numerous exhibitions including the Cambridge Contemporary, Wirksworth Festival, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Great North Art Show, Ripon and the Derbyshire Open, Buxton.
