Gill Gathercole

I paint contemporary still life and landscape, mainly in oil, but also mixed media. Inspired by collected objects and the Yorkshire coast and Peak district.

My landscapes are from memory and are more about evoking a sense of place rather than a direct representation. My still lives are from a collection of much loved objects in my studio. My interest is in exploring colour, marks, darkness and light and their relationships to each other. As well as painting I love drawing and always like to include my sketchbooks at Open Up. Some of my influences include; Elizabeth Blackaddder, Joan Miro, Joan Eardley, Winifrid Nicholson. I graduated in Fine Art from Nottingham in the 1980’s and have lived and worked in Sheffield since.

I exhibit my work in galleries locally and further afield. In recent years my work has been selected for numerous exhibitions including the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Great North Art Show Ripon, the Ferens Open Hull and the Derbyshire Open, Buxton.

I run regular art classes for adults at Hangingwater Studio.
