Although probably better known for having set up Cupola Gallery I’ve always been a practicing artist, having graduated in Fine Art from Hallam University in 1990. However, it’s fair to say that for many years the gallery swallowed most of my time and energy and it’s really only in the last four years that I have been painting again in earnest. The majority of my work is inspired by the landscape, in particular the landscape of Yorkshire & Northumberland. I love to draw ‘en plain air’ with my beloved chalk pastels and then use these sketches to inform expressive paintings and mixed media collages. Sometimes the resulting work depicts recognisable places but often the final images are a personal, abstract or semi abstract, response to the space, light, mood, colours and, often, the history of the area. In addition my work often expresses some very human aspect of myself.
