Maria Newman

Textile artist inspired by the love of gardens and flowers producing decorative and functional items for the home.

The inspiration for my work comes from my love of gardens and flowers, not only in my own garden but also from those that I have had the privilege to visit. It never ceases to amaze me how nature provides such an abundance of colour combinations throughout the seasons which I try to capture in my designs.

I like to incorporate various techniques in my work. I enjoy creating unique pieced backgrounds using skills learnt through patchwork and then adding more detail with applique, hand and machine embroidery. Most of the fabrics I use are bright printed cottons some of which are recycled. I particularly enjoy hand embroidery and work with lost of different yarns and threads which allow me to add more detail and texture to my work.

My work includes pieces that are decorative and functional items for the home.
