My work as a Textile Artist has developed over many years but I have always used machine embroidery as my main craft. I always start on paper with observational work, creating pieces in paint, pen and ink, watercolour or mixed media, before interpreting these in textile techniques. Some of my works on paper will also be for sale at OpenUp this year.
I create realistic work which develops into abstract form as I extract colour, texture and shapes from my observations and as the textile processes become as important as the initial theme.
My themes are usually landscape and seascape, though at times I close in on things like plants or architectural detail. I enjoy using my knowledge of fashion construction to build surfaces in my work, such as using frills and flounces to express water and waves.
I produce decorative wall hung pieces, handbags and costume for performance.
