Alfreda Reynolds

Black and white photographs with an emphasis on compositional form and graphic elements. Cards and archival quality, fine art prints.

Combining compositional elements such as line, shape and form with the values of light and contrast allows me to establish mood – so vital to working in shades of grey.

Change is important for my creativity. I enjoy experimenting with techniques such as camera movements, long exposures where the transient is transformed into a visible trace, and infrared images which shift another step from reality. They also provide the opportunity to apply a more diffused quality to my work whilst still maintaining a distinct graphic characteristic.

Exploration and experimentation can make for a slow process, with ideas sometimes only bearing fruit along the way, but every stage – from making the photograph to settling on a finished image – is part of the creative journey.

I work from digital and scanned film originals. Processing is digital and finished exhibition pieces are printed onto fine art paper using archival inks.
