ADVICE & HELP WITH IMAGES

1) Choosing your images

  • Choose images that show your actual work.
  • Move close enough to artwork to avoid distracting backgrounds or crop them out afterwards.
  • Be aware that images on your Open Up artist page are shown as square so some cropping will occur if your selected image is not square. This may be important when choosing images. Images will show in their entirety once clicked on.

2) Renaming your images

If you’ve not already done this when resizing your images you’ll need to do this before adding to the Open Up online application page. It is crucial that we are able to link image files to the appropriate artist.

Click the tabs below for renaming on different platforms:

Windows
  1. Navigate to your image file
  2. Right click on the file name
  3. Select Rename from the options
  4. Type in as appropriate, e.g.: yourname1-brochure, yourname2, yourname3, yourname4
iPhone & iPad
  1. Open the “Files” app on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Navigate to the file or folder you wish to rename in the iOS Files app
  3. Tap directly on the file or folder name
  4. Use the keyboard to rename the file. Type in as appropriate yourname1-brochure, yourname2, yourname3, yourname4
  5. Tap on the “Done” button to set the name change
Android
  1. Open your Android’s file manager. The app’s name varies by device, but it’s usually called File Manager, My Files, or Files. Look for an icon that looks like a folder or hard drive in the app drawer.
    If you don’t have a file manager installed, you can download a free one from the Play Store.
  2. Browse to the file you want to rename. Don’t open the file, just go to the folder where it is stored.
    If you can’t find the file, use the file manager’s search function, which usually looks like a magnifying glass at the top or bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap and hold the file name. This selects the file, and makes additional icons appear at either the top or bottom of the screen.
  4. Tap ⁝. It’s either at the top-right or bottom-right corner of the screen. A menu will appear.
  5. Tap Rename. You should now see a box containing the file’s current name.
  6. Enter the new name for the file. Type in as appropriate yourname1-brochure, yourname2, yourname3, yourname4.
    Leave the file extension at the end e.g. jpg
  7. Tap OK or Done. The file’s name will update immediately.

3) Resizing your images

  • Each image file should be no larger than 5 MB and must be in jpg, png or tiff file format
  • Shorter side must be no smaller than 1024px
  • Longer side must be no bigger than 2024px
  • To avoid overwriting the original always work on a copy of the image

Microsoft (MS) Paint
  1. In MS Paint, click File – Open. Navigate to the file on your computer. If resizing a photo from Facebook or another online service, you will need to download it first.
  2. Click the Resize button. In newer versions of Paint, the Resize button is located in the Home tab. In older versions of Paint, click the Image menu, and then select Resize/Skew.
  3. Choose your resize method. Check the Resize by pixels option and check the “Maintain aspect ratio” box. Both boxes will be filled in automatically when you enter one value,
  4. Click OK. This will change the image to the size that you specified.
  5. Save the resized image. Click File – Save As. Rename by typing in as appropriate Yourname1-brochureimage, Yourname2, Yourname3, Yourname4.
  6. Select a file type. Choose JPG or PNG.
Google Picasa
  1. Browse for your image in Picasa. If the image is not located in your Picasa library, add it by clicking File – Add File to Picasa. Once your file is in your Picasa library, select it.
  2. Export the image. Click File – Export Picture to Folder. Specify where the photo will be saved.
  3. Choose your resize options. In the “Image size” section, choose ‘Resize to’ enter a pixel number for the longest edge of the image. The other edge will be adjusted automatically. Remember max. 2024px and min 1024px!
  4. Select the desired image quality. Click the “Image quality” dropdown menu. Automatic will attempt to preserve the original quality as much as possible.
  5. Click Export. Your newly adjusted image will be copied to the location that you specified.
Adobe Photoshop
  1. In Photoshop, click File – Open. Browse for the image file on your computer.
  2. Open the Image Size tool. Click on the Image menu and select Image Size. This will open the Image Size window.
  3. Choose your resize method. Choose to resize in pixels. Enter the value you want in one field and the other field will be updated automatically to keep proportions the same.
  4. Choose your resample options. Choose either Bicubic or Bicubic Smoother for reducing the image size.
  5. Click OK to resize the image. You will see the results in your main window. Click File – Save As. Rename by typing in as appropriate Yourname1-brochureimage, Yourname2, Yourname3, Yourname4.
GIMP
  1. In GIMP, click File – Open. Browse for your file on your computer.
  2. Open the Scale Image tool. Click Image, select Scale Image. This will open a new window.
  3. Choose your resize method. Choose pixels (px) using the pulldown menu next to the Image Size fields. Enter the value that you want into one field and the other will be updated automatically to maintain proportions.
  4. Select your quality setting. Click the Quality pulldown menu and to select the type of resampling you want. The choice you make will affect the quality of your resized picture.
  5. Click Scale to resize the image. Click the Scale button and review the changes to your image. You can click the Edit menu and select Undo if necessary.
  6. Save your changes. Click File – Save As. Rename by typing in as appropriate Yourname1-brochureimage, Yourname2, Yourname3, Yourname4.
with Free Web Applications

There are many web services that will resize images for free. You will need to upload your image to the site and then choose your resize options.

Several of the more popular sites include:

  1. Upload your image. Navigate to the image on your computer, and then upload it to the website. Most web applications have a maximum file to be uploaded, typically around 5 MB.
  2. Resize the image. Depending on which service you are using, you may have multiple options when it comes to resizing. Almost all services will allow you to set an exact size in pixels.
  3. Set the quality. Most resize services will let you set how much compression the image will have. This affects the quality, so choose the highest you can.
  4. Other effects options. You won’t want any of these. Either skip or choose None.
  5. Download the new copy. Once you’ve picked all of your settings, click the Download or Resize button. The newly-edited photo will be downloaded to your computer.
