Around the Edges Pottery

I create earthy, hand-built ceramics inspired by organic shapes and textures. Visitors can see demonstrations of my coiling technique on the day in my garden studio.
I have worked with clay for many years – more recently in a new studio in my garden.
I originally learned the coiling method from Sue Dyer at the MAC in Birmingham and have worked with it ever since. I am essentially interested in form and texture. I rarely have a plan, each piece just evolves as I work. As I build, I circle the pot on a turntable , scraping the surface of the clay on the outside with different tools, shaping and pushing from the inside using rounded pebbles. I struggle to make small pots as scale matters to me as I need to place my hands within the vessel and feel its shape fully and comfortably.
Until recently my work has been gas fired using a friend’s kiln. I have now acquired my own electric kiln opening up new possibilities. Much experimentation lies ahead!
