Karen Sherwood

I paint expressive seascape paintings in oil despite being landlocked in Sheffield. I am massively inspired by Turner.

My paintings are oil on canvas, wood and paper from miniatures to large scale. I do not work to a plan. I start painting and see where the process takes me. My paintings all begin with abstract marks and random colours and then slowly evolve towards their final destination. My choice of colours and final image is often as much of a surprise to me as to anyone else. The mood of the final work is critical. In addition, the paint surface and abstract mark making is an important aspect. I’ve often said that I reflect how I am feeling about the world through the vehicle of landscape painting; the sea as a reflection of our unsettled times and images reminiscent of indeterminate places, a response to the notion that ‘place or home’ is becoming more important to many of us.

Major influences alongside Turner include, David Bomberg, Cy Twombly, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Eardley.

Work is for sale.
