Karen Sherwood

I paint in oils and am a messy painter! Come visit my working studio to see my process and work. I make large and small scale paintings of mainly coastal scenes. Turner is a major influence.

My paintings are process based. By that I mean that I do not work to a plan. I start painting and see where the process takes me. My paintings all begin with abstract marks and random colours and then slowly evolve towards their final destination. My choice of colours and final image is often as much of a surprise to me as to anyone else. The mood of the final work is critical and only when the mood ‘feels right’ is the painting finished. In addition, the paint surface and abstract mark making is an important aspect of the work. I’ve often said that I reflect how I am feeling about the world through the vehicle of landscape painting; the sea as a reflection of our unsettled times and images reminiscent of indeterminate places, a response to the notion that ‘place or home’ is becoming more important to many of us. Major influences alongside Turner include, David Bomberg, Cy Twombly, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Eardley.
