Karin Hessenberg
Figurative sculptures in high-fired ceramic. Portrait busts, figures, masks, small character heads exhibited in the garden and studio. Tools and equipment displayed in the studio.
My sculptures are made from high firing stoneware clay with a slightly rough texture, so most glazes have a matt finish. I model freehand and the glazes are painted on to the dry sculptures before firing slowly to 1260°C in an electric kiln. There is no prior biscuit firing.
Some sculptures are derived from old family photographs, and I have explored sculptural aspects such as distortion or extracting elements from these photos.
I have exhibited regularly with the Society of Portrait Sculptors.
Exhibitions in 2024 were with the Society of Portrait Sculptors in April, and at the Millennium Galleries, Sheffield, from July – October.
Recent events: Only Clay in 2023 and the Sheffield Ceramics Festival 2024.
I am an Associate of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and a member of the Northern Potters Association.
