Marcelle Lysmand

Using watercolours and a variety of mark making techniques on paper, I aim to encourage my viewers’ exploration of their world beyond the predictable.
I trained as an illustrator and never expected to paint flowers or plants or to work mainly in watercolour. I focus on capturing mood and feeling through what’s immediately around me in a way that’s both decorative and a little enigmatic.
I work small on paper, using watercolour and a mix of techniques, building up layers without a fixed plan. I try to begin without preconceptions so each painting grows naturally and in a way, flowers from the subconscious. I also embrace a bit of awkwardness that keeps the work alive and unpredictable. Inspiration comes most often while I’m working.
I exhibit regularly with private galleries across the UK, and my website is currently in development.
