Nigel Cunis
Japanese inspired mainly wood fired stoneware pottery including moonjars, large bottles, tea bowls, bud vases, cups, flower vases and sushi dishes.
The intention always is to create pleasingly irregular work on the cusp of functional and sculptural and infused with my own style. Pots are mainly ash glazed and wood fired. Most work is wheel thrown with larger pieces made by joining one or more sections including slab-built elements. Many forms are altered (cut, fluted, slip-wiped) to create glaze-catching surface interest. Clay is mainly iron-rich stoneware with occasional addition of silica sand or perlite to give extra body/texture. Terracotta “wild clay” (home-dug, sieved, dried and pug-milled) is also used. Ash glazes made from ash from wood burning stove in workshop. Other glazes include tenmoku, oribe and shino. Occasional under and over glaze addition of oxides. Ongoing experimentation with wood firing effects eg ash deposit and flame flashing. Pots fired in wood kiln to c.1280 degrees c. Occasional raku firings to c.900 degrees c.
