Jim Stringer/Quirky Metals

Quirky Metals

We are designer / metalworkers using mostly pewter (as well as other metals). Our designs are inspired by flora and fauna and the qualities of pewter.

We design and make gifts, collectibles and jewellery pieces in pewter. We use pressing, embossing, rolling and punching to put surface details onto the metal. We have a wide range of hand tools and silversmithing tools and can demonstrate the qualities of the metals we use.

Our work is inspired by nature and many surface patterns start out as line drawings which are produced into tools. We have developed some simple casting techniques using handmade moulds which we make from handcrafted pieces and we like to use rollers as an embossing tool which we often demonstrate to visitors.

Our workshop is a unit in an old Umbrella factory and is a brick built space which is hidden back off the main road. Visitors enjoy seeing a traditional workshop with traditional tools. During the Open Up event we will have a range of our work exhibited within the workshop and we will be able to talk through the processes of how the designs are made with simple demonstrations of what we do.
