Roger Nowell
Painter working with oils on board in an impressionistic style. Landscapes are my subject with a particular emphasis on local views on the western edge of Sheffield.
I am a self taught artist using oils in an impressionistic style. I like to keep my painting loose seeking to capture the essence of a place. I feel that the natural colours of the landscape are more than enough to play with. Simplifying and creating interesting brush strokes but with closely observed layered colours connects people with the place, time of day and season. I also like to develop texture by scratching to reveal underlayers of colour. Simple natural subjects, particularly trees, are what inspire me both as a walker and now as an artist.
My father passed onto me (as I have consequently passed onto my own children) a love of observation of places at all scales, from the detail of the plants of a hedgerow to the thrill of a dramatic view. Being able to interpret this love into painting is a real joy. The Canadian seven, led by Tom Thomson, made the ‘mundane’ everyday assemblages of the land beautiful and this is what I am always trying to emulate in my work.
