Sally Eliza Farrell

I am showing my landscape work with my sister Anna Buehring. These are recent pieces in cold wax, watercolour, inks and Japanese woodblock prints.
I began my creative work many years ago through textiles, mainly printed and painted silk. I have always enjoyed working with the translucent and painterly qualities of water-based dyes and paints and the compositional devices of Japanese prints. I enjoy the whole process of carving the blocks, preparing the rice papers and the watercolours to apply to the blocks before the printing. The anticipation of peeling off the paper from the block to see how it has turned out is so joyous and rewarding.
I enjoy the cold wax technique because of the process of layering colour on colour and the mark making method of scratching back through to reveal colours underneath and developing textural qualities observed in the landscape. Compositions are very process driven, and a landscape image is not always preplanned but revealed and composed as the process develops.
