Sally Puddifoot

My work focuses on the relationship between trees and resources such as light and soil, understanding how nature thrives in harsh conditions. I work in acrylic, watercolour, charcoal pen and ink.

Trained in printed textiles for fashion, I worked as a print designer for 20 years. I became interested in environmental conservation through volunteering in a wildflower meadow and now divide my time between painting and landscape management. My work is currently exploring ancient temperate rainforest and young silver birch woodlands. I paint both plein air and in my studio from sketches developed outside. My paintings are all places I visit and places that I seek to understand ecologically as well as visually. Some of the woodlands I paint are rare and ecologically incredibly valuable and some are old industrial sites where nature has taken back control. My work is semi abstract, I build up colour through opaque layers, seeking to capture the mood and fleeting light. The roots of my textile training often come through in my painting. My work has been exhibited and I have illustrated a book cover.
