Sue Lancaster

Inspired by the observation of nature I draw with a sewing machine layering and trapping various fabrics and exploiting their characteristics to suit my theme.
Whilst studying for my degree in Embroidered Textiles at Loughborough in the early seventies we were encouraged to draw from observation and develop designs from these drawings. This has remained a mainstay of my practice. Every embroiderer needs a background on which to stitch so I also dye, paint or print on fabric, felt wool and melt synthetics.
I constantly look at, record and imagine the potential for creative developments in the world around me.
I am thrilled by the combination of fabric and thread as colour schemes and textural contrasts.
I am captivated by the process of drawing with a sewing machine, it’s limitless possibilities, loving to draw wildly on a fast industrial model.
Ultimately I am concerned with producing high quality craftsmanship and that my products are fit for their purpose.
I am a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
