Alfreda Reynolds

Black and white photographs with an emphasis on compositional form and graphic elements. Cards and archival quality, fine art prints.

A black and white image is a form of simplification, leaving something for the imagination. I find colour can be distracting compositionally. Removing it allows me to pay attention to textures, contrasts, tones and shapes in order to create something visually interesting. It’s an opportunity to take a step away from reality and to consider the subject in unexpected and unpredictable ways.

Among the techniques I use are long exposures, camera movements and in particular infrared imagery. I find visual ambiguity endlessly intriguing and I’m always keen to find what may not be obviously there. Location-wise, coastal areas, natural and urban landscapes with a sense of absence or emptiness interest me. By nature I am a photographer of things rather than people.

I work from digital and scanned film originals. Processing is digital and finished exhibition pieces are printed onto fine art paper using archival inks.
