Sarah Lewis

Watercolour, predominantly in blues and greens, is my current favoured medium to explore abstract representations of coastal themes such as waves and found “treasures”.

I create pieces which are inspired by my love of the coast. Some of the work has an untouched or white centre as I incorporate a vortex held within the inertia of the sea, a moment held in time, caught within the turmoil of rolling waves.

Amidst the waves are carried “treasures” – uncontrollably spinning, smoothed, travelling and sometimes discarded on a beach. I take inspiration from these naturally formed little nuggets of treasure, wondering about the story of each unique piece and making images which portray these objects in all of their micro glory! flecks of seaweed, grains of sand, glass, shell…. all connected by their journey.

I often don’t set out with any preconceived intention other than to select my colours and begin to make marks. Getting lost in the process and letting the materials do the work is an important aspect of my pieces and as they evolve I make responses to develop the painting in a reactive way.
