Emma Hardy

Emma Hardy

I am an independent violin and viola maker. I have recently begun experimenting with using locally sourced woods, and incorporating decorative carvings into my practice.

In my workshop I carry out repair services on violins, violas and cellos for both professional and amateur players, alongside my work on making new violin family instruments.

My making ethos is to take inspiration and guidance from the great makers of the past, but not to be strictly bound by them. As such, I have begun experimenting with using locally sourced woods, and incorporating decorative carvings into my making.

I recently made a violin for the documentary, ‘Folk Who Roam’. Directed by award-winning producer Emma Crome, the film explores the connection between folk music, violin making and the importance of the right to roam in the countryside.

I spend much of my spare time out in the Peak District, walking, climbing and using the landscape as inspiration to inform my making, as well as being a member of various local music groups.
