Gerald Anthony Unwin
Ceramics, paintings & drawings have been the media for my wayward ideas taking shape from the traditional – slipware & domestic pieces – to quirky sculptures & contemporary genre paintings.
Having originally studied for a degree in Fine Art I focussed increasingly, though not exclusively, on the medium of ceramics during my professional career as a teacher & lecturer encouraging others to express their ideas creatively. With regard to my own work I’ve always enjoyed interpreting well known art genres by adding a contemporary twist. Ranging from slipware platters & cow creamers to idiomatic sculptures & images of the Madonna & Child many reflect an askance view of society today. Sometimes requiring a ‘second-take’ my humorous & easy to engage with work has recently been inspired by themes like endangered species, the natural environment such as rock faces in the Peak District, toxic waste & the green belt. This year, to encourage folk to purchase & enjoy the work in their own homes, I’m hoping to exhibit my pieces at ‘stock-clearance’ prices.
